“Calf weights in the past were consistently averaging 590 lbs/calf and after being on the Rio program calf weights increased to an average 638 lbs/calf this year!” Read more below!
The 1200 cows started on the Rio program in April of 2016, and when the cows were tested in the fall pregnancy rates had
increased approximately 6% from the normal 88-89%! With the Rio program contributing to better feed conversion increasing
milk production from the cows and hence impacting the weaning weights of the calves. This boosted the weaning weights
from the historical average of 590 lbs to 638 lbs for a total of 58,000 lbs of additional calf weight for 2016!
