From 10% Death Loss to 2–3% Across the Board
It's frustrating. Very I mean, when you're riding through cattle every day and you have that set that comes in that yesterday, you pulled ten. The next day, it's twenty. And then twenty five, thirty and it, keeps going up. You pulled one yesterday, and the next day, he looks worse. Doesn't look better. Gets to the point where you don't even know what to do no more. I've been doing this now for my whole life grew up around cattle. I do everything at once, so they get off the truck. I band, cut, whatever that's gonna get, implant. And our biggest problem was when we first started, what I could see is it's hard to get calves that never been on the bunk to eat. Hard to keep them full. They come in real pretty. Couple days later, you start going down. That's really the biggest change I've seen with Riomax. They've seemed to stay fuller and they respond to the medicine a little bit better. Before Riomax, what we were doing is, I mean, mass treating. It sounds kind of bad, but I've always told them, if we can keep anything under ten percent death loss, that was our goal. I mean, yeah, of course, anything under that's great. And I mean, at least me, realistically, that's what you're trying to do. And to compare to now, I mean, man, it's crazy life changing. I mean, where we're at now, We wouldn't be scared to say we're probably two or three percent death loss all the way across the board. I mean, it's just that's crazy. It's a little scary because it's never been that smooth. Now we look back and all them other ones we lost, maybe there was just this we could've done different. It saves one more calf, two more calves, that's a big difference. I mean, as expensive everything is nowadays. To make money in this, you cannot be losing dead animal. Every time you drag one out to the dead pile, you're looking fifteen hundred, twenty five hundred dollars. You have to do whatever you can. Went to Oklahoma the other day, we bought some four wheelers, talking to a guy that runs stocker calves. He said, man, where where's your death loss at? He didn't believe me when I told him. I said, man, well really, I don't have one right now. And we're running sale barn, we're running ranch calves. And I told him to call Julie and get some Riomax and see if he see the difference. I said, you'll see it. You notice it doctoring them. I mean, if you have a set you were pulling, you probably get fifteen. You can tell they move on faster. Those twenty one days are critical. First day they get here and you mass treat till twenty one days, you see that sort of up and down. And with this, there's more of a little constant. It's going up. You don't really see a downfall. You don't really see that one that's just dying there in the corner. Even if you look here in the pen, the cow's manure, you can see a lot of difference in it. It look more compact, not as runny. They just seem to hold feed better, and they're a little bit more active. They just have more energy. Like, they're holding more of the more of the intake protein they're holding it to better. And that make makes for a better gain, I think. It's not cheap, but I mean, if it's working, anything's cheaper than having ten percent death loss. It's a really good thing because it gets bad and people aren't happy when your your death rate's pretty high. It's it's hard to make a living when you can't keep them alive. You're starting in cattle and you you've seen a bad set to a good set, you'll notice it in the first thirty days or honestly two weeks. You do it long enough, you can see it. It's pretty pretty easy to see the difference. I might not be that old. I'm twenty nine years old, but I've done it all my life, and you damn sure you can tell the difference. Honestly, since the first Riomax tubs we got. We never quit ordering it now. We have it with us. The barn's full of it just to keep it on site.
Fast Facts
- Death loss dropped from a 10% "goal" to 2-3% across the board
- Sick pulls used to climb day after day, ten one day, twenty the next, then twenty-five, then thirty, before Riomax
- Calves stay fuller and answer to treatment better on the tub
- No more mass-treating whole sets of freshly weaned calves
- Manure looks more compact and less runny, calves holding onto more of their intake
- Never quit ordering Riomax since the first tubs, keeps the barn stocked with it
Eloy Marquez is twenty-nine years old, but he's been around cattle his whole life, and he runs everything through at once when calves get off the truck: banding, cutting, implanting, whatever needs doing. The hardest part in the early days was calves that had never been on a bunk before. They'd come in looking good, then a couple days later start going down, and keeping them full was the real fight. Before Riomax, the approach was mass treating the whole set, and the goal was simple: stay under 10% death loss and call that a win. Riomax changed what those first weeks looked like. Calves stayed fuller, and they responded to medicine better when they did need to be doctored.
Now he says he's running 2-3% death loss across the board, on both sale barn calves and ranch calves, and it caught a stocker operator in Oklahoma off guard when he heard the number. The first twenty-one days are the critical stretch, and where mass treating used to bring an up-and-down pattern, calves on Riomax show a steadier climb, without that one calf just dying in the corner of the pen. Even the manure looks different, more compact instead of runny, and the calves seem to hold onto more of what they're eating, more active, with more energy. Eloy figures that's part of what makes for better gain. Riomax isn't cheap, but next to the cost of a 10% death loss, he says it's the cheaper option, and the barn's been kept stocked with it ever since the first tubs came in.
"We never quit ordering it now. We have it with us. The barn's full of it just to keep it on site."

Seen a lot of savings on our on our pastures. Generally, figure about five and a half to six acres of pair around through here. We've been even last year through the drought of that we had of twenty twenty, we did four and a half acres of pair on on ours, still had adequate grass left. Cattle came off in good condition. They weren't weren't malnutritioned, weren't low body scores. Been running pretty consistent, six body score better on everything. We're paying right around fifty dollar an acre cash rent up here is kinda kind of a common thing. You can knock out an acre here off of every cow that that saves a lot of money. Mean, fifty fifty bucks and you don't need four hundred another four hundred acres. It's another twenty thousand. So all of a sudden you got forty forty five thousand dollars in your pocket and you still have all the extra added benefits through the mineral, the health benefits of it. And it really saved on the last year too with the drought. We didn't think we'd get through. We put the same amount of number in the pastures and it didn't rain. We pulled it out and we still had old grass in the pasture. I didn't know the tub saved that whole deal. We had stretched it a lot because there was a lot of people selling cows and we didn't sell anything and we didn't pull them out early. And this year, most of the pastures around here are pretty much nothing. And we drove through everything. We still got, you know, shoots of grass and tufts of grass all over the place. Not a lot, but it we kept them. It made a huge difference. As far as paying for itself, you know, you got to feed and you start saving instead of a lot of guys are up to forty five, fifty five pounds. It was figured somewhere in there a big cow and even when they had the calf on them sixty pounds. So if you're feeding thirty pounds, yeah, it's gonna easily pay for itself without you see a bit. I mean, we, you can see it on the cow calf pairs too, bigger calves. We calve in May, June, and we're weaving seven hundred and some pound calves off of Dallas. So it makes, yeah, we can see the difference really easy. You just go through each step and see We're running more cows than we used to run on the same acres. That is a big deal. Because I used to on on my pastures, they're not big pastures, but on my pastures, I used to run twenty five head and they would have it grazed down to nothing in five months easy. Now I can run thirty, thirty five on the same pastures, and they can stay there another month longer easy on any given year. And this year, they got to stay two months longer, and there's still grass left over. Well, yeah, it's high priced, but it's like if if you can afford or not. But I think you can afford it because you cannot afford not to feed it because you can get your cattle to market faster. They're healthier. You could run more cattle on your land or you can stay there longer before you have to move on to an another patch. The cows are way healthier. They're way more content. They're happy. They're happy cows.

"We've been able to save enough hay with Riomax and we're increasing our production with Rhyzogreen. Both of those products have made it possible for us to have the confidence in knowing we're gonna be just fine.
Dan Reinke

"I think it's a pretty cheap way to get way more out of your soil than what we do weithout. More out of what they eat, so they eat less, and Rhyzogreen gives them more grass."
Shane Keller

"...It's a win-win. You're attacking it on both fronts and you're nailing it on both fronts, so it's kind of a no-brainer. Why wouldn't you do both (Riomax and Rhyzogreen) at the same time?"
Bradley Franke

"I saw increased yields on every field I treated, every one...The worst yield increase was 17% up to 85%."
Todd Farrington

“The ground I sprayed versus the ground I didn’t was about 3 bales to the acre difference... $300/acre value. The product has more than paid for itself. This is something we’ll continue to do. It speaks for itself.”

“Went from 40 acres/cow in this drought to 30 acres/ cow . . . that’s $70/ cow/year!“
