The cost of poor cattle mineral: why i finally made the switch
Well, you look at over 3,000 a ton makes you I mean, honestly, I kinda just brushed it off. I'm thinking, like, I don't know how I'm gonna justify how is it gonna create that value coming back? Scott We're in Luther, Montana, just outside of Red Lodge. Been in the ranching industry all my life, grew up in it. Got out of it for a while and back in it, and been currently at the ranch I'm on now for coming on twenty years. It's the lifestyle I wanted to raise my kids in. The freedom to just run out the screen door, go do what they do, and, you know, find entertainment of their own. I found myself using a loose mineral and salt, and I was having really a struggle with breed up in my first calf heifers. Getting my yearling heifers pregnant, I was struggling. And it wasn't just a one off. It was pretty consistently year after year. I wasn't getting the results I wanted. There was years I was in the 25% open range, which was unacceptable. I'm always one to try and think outside the box or try and make more out of what I have, try and do a little bit better job than just the normal. You know, the gut feeling with the Riomax is is there's enough people that say it worked for me, and they weren't paid to say that. And if it didn't work, they wouldn't have said it. So I felt like it's gonna be a step in the right direction, and I tried it strictly on my first calf heifer or my yearly heifer through breeding season. I gave them sixty days ahead, sixty days after, so I could, you know, just follow the protocol, see if it helped. And I put all my cow herd on it after that. That tells you the answers I got. So through the vets, talked about vaccine protocols, and we changed our vaccine protocol. We changed our mineral protocol. We changed my pasture rotations, and we achieved a very desirable goal. In that year, not every heifer calved, but every heifer break tested pregnant. I had one get sick and slip a calf. That was AI bred. And then one that was caught by bull, she ended up slipping a calf again. But according to the vet, a 100% conception that year. And I can't tell you which one did it or if it's an accumulating factor of each building on each one, but it worked. Traditionally, I would take my 1,500 pound cows and the standard through the winter was 30 pounds a day. The first winter, well, after I preg tested my first group of heifers, I threw my cows on it and just kept pulling back on the feed. And they went through that winter on 24 pounds. I wanna never go below a six, BCS. I try to stay at six as my baseline. Those cows, everything came through as a six or better. I was really leery about consumption levels, and they started out of the gate just a tick over two ounces, and they hung right at that two ounce to three ounce level a day. Being the math driven guy, you know, that's the same price I was paying for loose mineral. When I take four ounces of loose mineral, two ounces of this, it's really, across the board, about the same money. So everything else I got, I viewed as a benefit. I mean, it feels like the research paid off, is what it really feels like. It's like, it wasn't me being smart. It wasn't me better than the neighbor. It was the people around me, the resources that had the answers, and you just had to swallow your pride and listen to them. You know? So that's kinda my take on that. I would say don't expect it to cure the problem tomorrow, But it is a great tool to accompany solid management practices. It is a great tool and it's financially beneficial in the long run. I have data to support all that. I mean, have great testing records to go back, as far as you wanna go back and look. And the data says it's a very good product that is worth the money.
Fast Facts
- 100% heifer conception after a full protocol overhaul
- Winter feed cut from 30 to 24 lbs/day on 1,500 lb cows
- Every cow held a BCS of 6 or better
- Steady Riomax consumption of 2 to 3 oz/day
- About the same cost as his loose mineral
Scott has ranched outside Red Lodge, Montana, for close to twenty years, raising his kids in a place where they can run out the screen door and find their own fun. On loose mineral and salt, he fought to get his yearling heifers bred year after year, with some years running as high as 25% open. Riomax's price tag of over $3,000 a ton made him brush it off at first, but enough unpaid ranchers said it worked that he gave it a shot on his yearling heifers, sixty days before and sixty days after breeding. Working with his vets, he also changed his vaccine protocol, mineral protocol, and pasture rotations that same year. The vet called it 100% conception. Scott is upfront that he can't say which change did it, or whether it was all of them building on each other.
What he saw next sold him. He put the whole cow herd on Riomax and kept pulling back on feed. Where his 1,500 lb cows had always needed 30 pounds a day through winter, they got by on 24, and every one came through at a body condition score of 6 or better. Consumption held between two and three ounces a day. Since that's half of the four ounces of loose mineral he'd been feeding, Scott figured it came out to about the same money, and he counts everything else as a benefit. With testing records going back as far as anyone wants to look, he says the data shows it's worth the money.
"I would say don't expect it to cure the problem tomorrow, but it is a great tool to accompany solid management practices."

Seen a lot of savings on our on our pastures. Generally, figure about five and a half to six acres of pair around through here. We've been even last year through the drought of that we had of twenty twenty, we did four and a half acres of pair on on ours, still had adequate grass left. Cattle came off in good condition. They weren't weren't malnutritioned, weren't low body scores. Been running pretty consistent, six body score better on everything. We're paying right around fifty dollar an acre cash rent up here is kinda kind of a common thing. You can knock out an acre here off of every cow that that saves a lot of money. Mean, fifty fifty bucks and you don't need four hundred another four hundred acres. It's another twenty thousand. So all of a sudden you got forty forty five thousand dollars in your pocket and you still have all the extra added benefits through the mineral, the health benefits of it. And it really saved on the last year too with the drought. We didn't think we'd get through. We put the same amount of number in the pastures and it didn't rain. We pulled it out and we still had old grass in the pasture. I didn't know the tub saved that whole deal. We had stretched it a lot because there was a lot of people selling cows and we didn't sell anything and we didn't pull them out early. And this year, most of the pastures around here are pretty much nothing. And we drove through everything. We still got, you know, shoots of grass and tufts of grass all over the place. Not a lot, but it we kept them. It made a huge difference. As far as paying for itself, you know, you got to feed and you start saving instead of a lot of guys are up to forty five, fifty five pounds. It was figured somewhere in there a big cow and even when they had the calf on them sixty pounds. So if you're feeding thirty pounds, yeah, it's gonna easily pay for itself without you see a bit. I mean, we, you can see it on the cow calf pairs too, bigger calves. We calve in May, June, and we're weaving seven hundred and some pound calves off of Dallas. So it makes, yeah, we can see the difference really easy. You just go through each step and see We're running more cows than we used to run on the same acres. That is a big deal. Because I used to on on my pastures, they're not big pastures, but on my pastures, I used to run twenty five head and they would have it grazed down to nothing in five months easy. Now I can run thirty, thirty five on the same pastures, and they can stay there another month longer easy on any given year. And this year, they got to stay two months longer, and there's still grass left over. Well, yeah, it's high priced, but it's like if if you can afford or not. But I think you can afford it because you cannot afford not to feed it because you can get your cattle to market faster. They're healthier. You could run more cattle on your land or you can stay there longer before you have to move on to an another patch. The cows are way healthier. They're way more content. They're happy. They're happy cows.

"We've been able to save enough hay with Riomax and we're increasing our production with Rhyzogreen. Both of those products have made it possible for us to have the confidence in knowing we're gonna be just fine.
Dan Reinke
Sheridan, WY
"I think it's a pretty cheap way to get way more out of your soil than what we do weithout. More out of what they eat, so they eat less, and Rhyzogreen gives them more grass."
Shane Keller
Valentine, NE
"...It's a win-win. You're attacking it on both fronts and you're nailing it on both fronts, so it's kind of a no-brainer. Why wouldn't you do both (Riomax and Rhyzogreen) at the same time?"
Bradley Franke
Cross Plains, TX
"I saw increased yields on every field I treated, every one...The worst yield increase was 17% up to 85%."
Todd Farrington
Collbran, CO
“The ground I sprayed versus the ground I didn’t was about 3 bales to the acre difference... $300/acre value. The product has more than paid for itself. This is something we’ll continue to do. It speaks for itself.”
Jim Lambert
Whitney, NE
“Went from 40 acres/cow in this drought to 30 acres/ cow . . . that’s $70/ cow/year!“
Raymond Rivale

"My disease in my calves has went down tremendously, and I attribute it to Riomax. That's the only thing I changed."
