HOW WE SAVED $6,000 ON HAY IN 80 DAYS!
So y'all gonna just cut all this and clip it all together? I guess. Is that what you do at most places or do people just start talking and talk? I'm Cody Fox. I live in Charleston, Arkansas. Yes. I've started as soon as I could walk doing cattle. We do also do poultry houses. I do like cattle a lot better than poultry. The mineral we've been using is a loose mineral from the local co ops, a real popular brand around here. Definitely was not happy with the conception we were getting. The last two years had been pretty bad and I talked to the companies and it just hadn't gotten any better. They told me to quit feeding salt with it because there's salt in it and the cows consumption went up dramatically. We were spending thousands on mineral at that point. Going into winter we were worried about how much hay it was going to take to feed our cows and we reached a point where we started doing some math and we were going to be way short and that's a big reason we started the Rio Tubs. I'm not gonna lie, my wife flipped out the first tubs I went and bought bought a couple tons and she was full panic mode. So when I first started, I say so every time for some reason. You're gonna have to edit a bunch of so's out. I forgot about what we were talking about. So when we started the tubs, our cattle for the first three weeks, they hammered it and we were worried. Talked to my dealer at that time and he told me don't worry about it, they're gonna level out. They sure enough did. We weren't even close to the one third limit after they leveled out. The first thing I noticed was the manure change and it went from the hard pack manure to the pancake consistency. The second thing was the cattle being more content and they were spending less time at the hay rings and more time just laying around. And once we've seen the hay savings, we put it out everywhere because it it we got about thirty percent hay savings on it. The first eighty days we saved over six thousand dollars I mean that's a lot of money. With the reproductive aspect of it going the way it is all that is just money back in our pocket. I was pretty pumped while we were doing the pregnancy test when one herd went up eleven percent in which that's pretty dramatic. Mean that's going be ten extra calves in that one herd alone and we just did another herd on a lease place that I've got and the conception rate on that place was ninety seven percent which is ten plus percent better than we've ever got. Those ten calves you're looking at nearly twenty five thousand dollars I mean in that one pasture alone. The hay savings was great but the conception rate's gonna more than pay for my Riomax tubs for the year. I'm ecstatic about it. A lot of people don't like spending the money upfront on the tubs and I didn't either honestly but when you start figuring out what it's going to make you, it's easy to spend and our winters can go from eighty degrees down to twenty degrees in the next day. You have a lot of snotty noses, a lot of sickness and after we started the tubs in the field that we started it first in, we did not doctor one calf. Kind of crazy, I mean you see your neighbors with calves with snotty noses and your overall herd health is just better. With the minerals in Rio tubs being fully protected the way they are, I think that the calves are getting what they need, absorbing it a lot better. They're also getting, what they need from the mother. She's got the minerals that she needs. They just hit it when they need it. We notice with the calves that they self regulate but they hit them more often than the cows. The cows hit them when they need them. Keep a salt block on top and the cows are gonna get salt when they need it and they're gonna hit the tub when they need it. What were your thoughts when you first heard the price? Yeah. So when we first heard about the price of it, I was talking to a to a dealer and he told me, he said, You're gonna not like the original price, but it's going to pay for itself. I can honestly say now they do pay for their self. They more than pay for their self. Farming, a lot of farming is getting what you can get out of what you have and that's what the Rio Tubs does best. It don't matter what they eat, they convert it better and you're going to save on hay, you're going save on grass, you're going to save on feed, you're going to get better conception rates. So they easily pay for their self in my opinion.

Fast Facts
- $6,000 Saved In Hay
- 97% Conception Rates (10-11% improvement)
- Reduced open rates, better conception
- Hay lasting 30% longer
Cody had been feeding what everyone else fed—but the numbers weren’t adding up. Conception rates were slipping, mineral costs were climbing, and going into winter they were already worried about hay.
So he tried something different.
After the initial adjustment, things started to change fast. Cattle settled down, spent less time at the hay ring, and hay started lasting longer—about 30% longer. In the first 80 days alone, that added up to over $6,000 saved.
Then came breeding. One herd jumped 11%, and another hit 97%—over 10% better than they’d ever seen, which pencils out to thousands more per pasture.
Same cows, same ground—just getting more out of both.
Open cows, pounds you don't wean, sickness, or forage that goes out the back end don't make you money, do they?
A healthy herd drives profits higher. And a profitable ranch can withstand volatile markets and unpredictable weather. Gain control of your future.

Seen a lot of savings on our on our pastures. Generally, figure about five and a half to six acres of pair around through here. We've been even last year through the drought of that we had of twenty twenty, we did four and a half acres of pair on on ours, still had adequate grass left. Cattle came off in good condition. They weren't weren't malnutritioned, weren't low body scores. Been running pretty consistent, six body score better on everything. We're paying right around fifty dollar an acre cash rent up here is kinda kind of a common thing. You can knock out an acre here off of every cow that that saves a lot of money. Mean, fifty fifty bucks and you don't need four hundred another four hundred acres. It's another twenty thousand. So all of a sudden you got forty forty five thousand dollars in your pocket and you still have all the extra added benefits through the mineral, the health benefits of it. And it really saved on the last year too with the drought. We didn't think we'd get through. We put the same amount of number in the pastures and it didn't rain. We pulled it out and we still had old grass in the pasture. I didn't know the tub saved that whole deal. We had stretched it a lot because there was a lot of people selling cows and we didn't sell anything and we didn't pull them out early. And this year, most of the pastures around here are pretty much nothing. And we drove through everything. We still got, you know, shoots of grass and tufts of grass all over the place. Not a lot, but it we kept them. It made a huge difference. As far as paying for itself, you know, you got to feed and you start saving instead of a lot of guys are up to forty five, fifty five pounds. It was figured somewhere in there a big cow and even when they had the calf on them sixty pounds. So if you're feeding thirty pounds, yeah, it's gonna easily pay for itself without you see a bit. I mean, we, you can see it on the cow calf pairs too, bigger calves. We calve in May, June, and we're weaving seven hundred and some pound calves off of Dallas. So it makes, yeah, we can see the difference really easy. You just go through each step and see We're running more cows than we used to run on the same acres. That is a big deal. Because I used to on on my pastures, they're not big pastures, but on my pastures, I used to run twenty five head and they would have it grazed down to nothing in five months easy. Now I can run thirty, thirty five on the same pastures, and they can stay there another month longer easy on any given year. And this year, they got to stay two months longer, and there's still grass left over. Well, yeah, it's high priced, but it's like if if you can afford or not. But I think you can afford it because you cannot afford not to feed it because you can get your cattle to market faster. They're healthier. You could run more cattle on your land or you can stay there longer before you have to move on to an another patch. The cows are way healthier. They're way more content. They're happy. They're happy cows.
