Why We Stopped Using Cake and Switched to Tubs
Us as humans, we're just full of ourselves. We think we can outsmart nature and we'll just supplement them. So all this supplementation happens, so what you end up with a few generations down the road is a bunch of cow herds that can't operate without being subsidized. Kind of like people. Handouts, handouts, handouts. Guess what? That guy don't want to go to work no more. He's going to stand in the corner until you hand feed him and our cows are getting that way. Name's Kurt Waddington. I've been basically ranching for thirty one years. I've been here in the state of Wyoming going on three It's been good. It's put food on our table. Guys like me aren't into this to make a bunch of money because you're not going to. You're into it because you love it and a way of doing things, take pride in how you do things, keeping a hold of some of the old ways of doing things. It keeps it interesting and it keeps your kids interested. It's called the VR because the Queen of England funded a Scotsman by the name of Walcott. We've gotten some financial trouble, and part of the deal was... So I was told he had to put the VR for Victoria. Some people say it's Victoria Regina was her name. Others say it was Victoria Ranch. But anyway, it goes way back in the barn we're in right now is, you know, there's dates on all back to like 1911. Where I come from, they don't do pellets. There is tub and there's a lot of liquid. There's a lot of holes in it. You know, you're you're you're limited on weather, location. And so I wanted to find a tub that was good. And I've used these other ones and they just they just sit there and eat them. They just eat them, eat them, eat them, eat them. And the tub again and the tub again, you know. We fought scours and purple Really bad with the cabster and calving. And Mark had got ahold of me about Riomax that they tried out. He had a lot of guys talking about the purple gut. Like they're not seeing it. Scours are not seeing it. And when I first came here, the year before last, so we first did the Riomax. No purple gut, no scours. I can honestly say we didn't see it last year and the year before. I've used a lot of different products and this one, I like it. The price scared me to death, but when it's all said and done, it's cheaper. For the last two years, it's been right on the money, right on the money, £0.25 a day, sometimes less. You take the other product plus mineral plus salt, you're way up there. I think all in all you've got three things, four things, five things wrapped up into one bundle. I couldn't tell you without a calculator, but the cake is just the cattle do good on it, but some cows come in and they'll eat five pounds. One cow might get a half a pound, one cow might not get any. And if it's raining or snowing, most of it goes in the mud. Once it gets muddy, there's no way they can touch it. That alone, without the math, tells me something like this is way more... You're getting your money's worth. Because, yeah, cake might be cheaper, yeah, it might be this fantastic protein energy, but not every cow's getting what she deserves or what she should have. Again, if it's muddy, snowy, guess what? How many pounds of pellets is down in that mud that you paid for? You know, so this, makes sense to me. I don't think you got to do a whole lot of math. Just the common sense of you're comparing it to some of this other stuff I've used. It's kind of a no brainer to me. I'm I'm pretty simple minded, sometimes too simple minded, it seems like a no brainer to me. So no, couldn't put a price on them.
Fast Facts
- No scours or purple gut seen in two years on Riomax
- Cost him about 25 cents a day, sometimes less
- One tub instead of a separate product, mineral, and salt
- Cheaper all in, despite the sticker shock
- No money lost in the mud like with cake
Curt Waddington has been ranching for 31 years, and he’s upfront that guys like him aren’t in it to make a bunch of money. He does it because he loves it, takes pride in how things get done, and likes keeping some of the old ways alive. These days that’s in Wyoming, on a place called the V-R Ranch, where the barn has dates going back to around 1911. It’s tub and liquid country, and the tubs he’d used before were eaten again and again, one after another. Calving brought its own trouble, with scours and purple gut hitting hard. Then a dealer reached out about Riomax and the ranchers he’d talked to weren’t seeing purple gut, and Curt started on it the year before last, when he first came to the V-R Ranch.
Since then, Curt says they haven’t seen purple gut or scours, last year or the year before. The price gave him pause at first, but over two years his cost has run right around 25 cents a day, sometimes less. Before, he was buying another product plus mineral plus salt. He also compares it to cake. Cattle do well on it, but some cows eat five pounds while others get half a pound or nothing, and when it rains or snows most of it ends up in the mud. “It’s kind of a no brainer to me.”
Open cows, pounds you don't wean, sickness, or forage that goes out the back end don't make you money, do they?

Seen a lot of savings on our on our pastures. Generally, figure about five and a half to six acres of pair around through here. We've been even last year through the drought of that we had of twenty twenty, we did four and a half acres of pair on on ours, still had adequate grass left. Cattle came off in good condition. They weren't weren't malnutritioned, weren't low body scores. Been running pretty consistent, six body score better on everything. We're paying right around fifty dollar an acre cash rent up here is kinda kind of a common thing. You can knock out an acre here off of every cow that that saves a lot of money. Mean, fifty fifty bucks and you don't need four hundred another four hundred acres. It's another twenty thousand. So all of a sudden you got forty forty five thousand dollars in your pocket and you still have all the extra added benefits through the mineral, the health benefits of it. And it really saved on the last year too with the drought. We didn't think we'd get through. We put the same amount of number in the pastures and it didn't rain. We pulled it out and we still had old grass in the pasture. I didn't know the tub saved that whole deal. We had stretched it a lot because there was a lot of people selling cows and we didn't sell anything and we didn't pull them out early. And this year, most of the pastures around here are pretty much nothing. And we drove through everything. We still got, you know, shoots of grass and tufts of grass all over the place. Not a lot, but it we kept them. It made a huge difference. As far as paying for itself, you know, you got to feed and you start saving instead of a lot of guys are up to forty five, fifty five pounds. It was figured somewhere in there a big cow and even when they had the calf on them sixty pounds. So if you're feeding thirty pounds, yeah, it's gonna easily pay for itself without you see a bit. I mean, we, you can see it on the cow calf pairs too, bigger calves. We calve in May, June, and we're weaving seven hundred and some pound calves off of Dallas. So it makes, yeah, we can see the difference really easy. You just go through each step and see We're running more cows than we used to run on the same acres. That is a big deal. Because I used to on on my pastures, they're not big pastures, but on my pastures, I used to run twenty five head and they would have it grazed down to nothing in five months easy. Now I can run thirty, thirty five on the same pastures, and they can stay there another month longer easy on any given year. And this year, they got to stay two months longer, and there's still grass left over. Well, yeah, it's high priced, but it's like if if you can afford or not. But I think you can afford it because you cannot afford not to feed it because you can get your cattle to market faster. They're healthier. You could run more cattle on your land or you can stay there longer before you have to move on to an another patch. The cows are way healthier. They're way more content. They're happy. They're happy cows.

"We've been able to save enough hay with Riomax and we're increasing our production with Rhyzogreen. Both of those products have made it possible for us to have the confidence in knowing we're gonna be just fine.
Dan Reinke
Sheridan, WY
"I think it's a pretty cheap way to get way more out of your soil than what we do weithout. More out of what they eat, so they eat less, and Rhyzogreen gives them more grass."
Shane Keller
Valentine, NE
"...It's a win-win. You're attacking it on both fronts and you're nailing it on both fronts, so it's kind of a no-brainer. Why wouldn't you do both (Riomax and Rhyzogreen) at the same time?"
Bradley Franke
Cross Plains, TX
"I saw increased yields on every field I treated, every one...The worst yield increase was 17% up to 85%."
Todd Farrington
Collbran, CO
“The ground I sprayed versus the ground I didn’t was about 3 bales to the acre difference... $300/acre value. The product has more than paid for itself. This is something we’ll continue to do. It speaks for itself.”
Jim Lambert
Whitney, NE
“Went from 40 acres/cow in this drought to 30 acres/ cow . . . that’s $70/ cow/year!“
Raymond Rivale
Des Moines, NM
"My disease in my calves has went down tremendously, and I attribute it to Riomax. That's the only thing I changed."
Leon Mcelprang
Huntington, UT
