I Quit It for 18 Months. Here's What Happened to My Herd.
I know this might not be popular. It ain't that that ain't a benefit. It it's just something in that tub. I'm not no scientist. Everybody that buys a bull from me, because I'm a little guy, they always wanna come to your farm to see your cows. They're judging your bull. Even no matter how much of a rock star he is, they're gonna wanna look at the cow. And when you show them a cow like our cows, that'll sell the bull by itself. I just always been a vitamin guy because all my friends that I know wasn't feeding vitamins, they never could get none pregnant. Run across this Rio tub, went and bought some of them. Which started in the winter of this one year. They told me to put one tub for fifty head. I didn't believe it, so I put two tubs out for fifty head. And within ten days, my wife asked me, said, are you putting out bad hay? The cows ain't eating your hay. We got to watching them, and they wouldn't chase my buggy when I come in the field. That saved me three bales a week in seven days. That was sixty dollars a bale for the good hay, and that's a hundred and eighty bucks a week. Figured out I was feeding about a hundred and twenty bucks a week, but I was saving a hundred and eighty, so felt like I was still making sixty bucks a week on my hay. And then I had I didn't buy no more mineral. That saved me eighty dollars a week. I wouldn't have to go out as much as I was before. I wouldn't have to run the tractor, get out in the cold. We just figured out real fast that this was it. And your camera's not pointing over to my hay lot. I got hay there that's gonna have to be carried over to next year because they just ain't no way to feed it. I don't want no drought. Right. But if it comes, I guess I got some hay to try to suffer through it. I'm telling you, if I fed three hundred and fifty bales of hay every year, this year I probably fed two sixty. I don't know if that's thirty percent, but it is twenty five percent. I'm one hundred percent sure it's twenty five percent. When you look at their cow pie, it's not like a beehive. It's down flat, You're not feeding no extra protein. It'll do it on the worst hay that you can get. And that means they're digesting more of that. Their body's getting more of that. I could only find Riomax about two hours away. He was buying by the semi loads. I wasn't able to buy by the semi loads because I was still just testing it. I'd go buy eight tubs at a time. We did that, I got on them, I could see the improvement. I was like, I ain't ever getting off these things. And then somebody tried to sell him a cheaper tub, a green looking tub, both really, real, real close to it. Numbers pretty well kinda matched. So I bought that tub, but my cows didn't like it. And their poop changed. They just wouldn't lick on the tub. And I noticed that that year, I doctored again. I had that foot problem, hair shed problem, I quit feeding that tub because I know it wasn't working. I just went back to Sac Mineral, the name brand stuff. Last September, I noticed those videos back on YouTube, and I got to watching them again. And there's a buddy of mine that I didn't even know that was fifty miles from me. I called him and I said, hey. Are you doing Riomax? He said, yeah. You heard of them? I said, yeah. I used to feed them. I said, but I've been out for a year and a half and can't find them. I said, well, I want some of them. And now that I got my connection, know I can buy them by the truck. I I ain't getting off of them. I've been on them again for six months. The hundred bucks a week I was saving from using the tub, it ain't that that ain't a benefit, but that's not the benefit that I'm so hung on. My health of my cows, the calving, the pregnancy rate, that's worth more than the hundred dollars a week. I don't know how to put a price on It it's just something in that tub. I'm not no scientist, but all I know is it works. After that mineral gets in that mama, she starts pumping that to that baby. That calf is up, and I've timed it. Ten minutes, done at the back nursing. If you get to work and can't get back out here, you can't hardly catch them because they've got that much energy built up in them. They're fast. If that tub, I'm convinced that's putting it in that cow and it's bleeding back through that calf. They ain't nothing like seeing life born and it jump up and full of life and take off running. It's probably one of the greatest thrills in all of life. Like I said, I'm not a scientist, but I really think that's what's happening to the cow. I think her milk is richer, and that calf is growing that much faster because of her milk. I just don't know how to put that into words, but that is what I think is happening. We AI'd. We we give the blue liquid medicine ten days before, got them in top condition. They're score of a five and a half. There's probably eighty five to ninety percent conception rate with the AI. All that, it pays for itself. But when you write that check, and my my wife don't ever hardly know what I'm doing. When I write that check and she's seen that amount, she thought I'd flip my lid. But now since we've calved, you can't get her off of them either. When you got that kind of results, that check don't look that big. Now we're coming into the summer, and I keep the tub out year round. I don't take it in ever. We're gonna get another fifteen head on that same piece of land by using this tub during the summer. We're we're making money off of it regardless of what your brain wants to think versus what the pencil says. The pencil's always right. And until you go through that spot and you say, man, I didn't do this or I didn't do that or they they weaned out extra here or I didn't even know this but I cut three feedings a week out. I feel like I'm kind of splitting it with Riomax fiftyfifty. I'm paying that amount for that tub but I'm getting fifty percent more savings out of cow prices and pregnancies than I had ever before. So I'm willing to split fifty percent with somebody if I'm getting fifty percent of something I never had. I know this might not be popular. Don't feed it for one month and give an opinion because you're gonna be thinking, you know, in their bellies have got a hole in it, but it it won't matter. It won't matter. You just hold hold on to the course, they'll cut back, and you'll never probably get off of them again. The blue tub may have protein in it, the green tub, but all that, it it don't matter. Only thing that matters is at the end of the day, the dollars that that farmer gets to take to the bank. Nothing else matters.
FARRELL MCGHEE - Westphalia, KS
Fast Facts
- Saving $180 per week on feed
- Reduced hay consumption
- Better AI Conception
- Fewer health issues
Farrell McGhee isn’t a scientist — he’s a cattleman. In this video, Farrell shares his real-world experience using Riomax tubs on his cow/calf operation and why he believes they’ve changed the health and performance of his herd.
Like many smaller producers, Farrell says people buying bulls want to see the cows first. For him, maintaining healthy cattle, strong calves, and dependable conception rates matters more than anything else.
After starting Riomax, Farrell noticed:
Reduced hay consumption, less waste feeding, improved cow condition, stronger calves with more energy, better AI conception rates, fewer health issues compared to cheaper alternatives
He also explains why he left Riomax for a period of time, what happened after switching to another tub, and why he ultimately came back.
This isn’t a sales pitch — it’s one rancher explaining what he’s seen in his own pasture.
Open cows, pounds you don't wean, sickness, or forage that goes out the back end don't make you money, do they?
A healthy herd drives profits higher. And a profitable ranch can withstand volatile markets and unpredictable weather. Gain control of your future.
15-30% forage & hay savings with Riomax
Riomax® is revolutionizing the way ranchers deal with high input costs. With better digestion, your herd can get all the nutrients they need from less grass. This leaves you with more days on grass (you start feeding later in the fall), less stress, and a more padded pocketbook.
Seen a lot of savings on our on our pastures. Generally, figure about five and a half to six acres of pair around through here. We've been even last year through the drought of that we had of twenty twenty, we did four and a half acres of pair on on ours, still had adequate grass left. Cattle came off in good condition. They weren't weren't malnutritioned, weren't low body scores. Been running pretty consistent, six body score better on everything. We're paying right around fifty dollar an acre cash rent up here is kinda kind of a common thing. You can knock out an acre here off of every cow that that saves a lot of money. Mean, fifty fifty bucks and you don't need four hundred another four hundred acres. It's another twenty thousand. So all of a sudden you got forty forty five thousand dollars in your pocket and you still have all the extra added benefits through the mineral, the health benefits of it. And it really saved on the last year too with the drought. We didn't think we'd get through. We put the same amount of number in the pastures and it didn't rain. We pulled it out and we still had old grass in the pasture. I didn't know the tub saved that whole deal. We had stretched it a lot because there was a lot of people selling cows and we didn't sell anything and we didn't pull them out early. And this year, most of the pastures around here are pretty much nothing. And we drove through everything. We still got, you know, shoots of grass and tufts of grass all over the place. Not a lot, but it we kept them. It made a huge difference. As far as paying for itself, you know, you got to feed and you start saving instead of a lot of guys are up to forty five, fifty five pounds. It was figured somewhere in there a big cow and even when they had the calf on them sixty pounds. So if you're feeding thirty pounds, yeah, it's gonna easily pay for itself without you see a bit. I mean, we, you can see it on the cow calf pairs too, bigger calves. We calve in May, June, and we're weaving seven hundred and some pound calves off of Dallas. So it makes, yeah, we can see the difference really easy. You just go through each step and see We're running more cows than we used to run on the same acres. That is a big deal. Because I used to on on my pastures, they're not big pastures, but on my pastures, I used to run twenty five head and they would have it grazed down to nothing in five months easy. Now I can run thirty, thirty five on the same pastures, and they can stay there another month longer easy on any given year. And this year, they got to stay two months longer, and there's still grass left over. Well, yeah, it's high priced, but it's like if if you can afford or not. But I think you can afford it because you cannot afford not to feed it because you can get your cattle to market faster. They're healthier. You could run more cattle on your land or you can stay there longer before you have to move on to an another patch. The cows are way healthier. They're way more content. They're happy. They're happy cows.
