Turboboost Results on Stocker Calves

Fast Facts

  • Pull rate ran 3-to-1 lower on calves given the Turboboost program
  • None of the treated calves needed doctoring twice
  • Doctored just 4-5 head, lost none, all stayed with their bunch
  • Untreated sickness can cost 30-45 extra days to catch back up to sale weight
  • Fewer sick calves could mean 2 fewer cowboys needed at fall roundup
  • Calf costs jumped from $700-800 to $2,400 a head, raising the stakes on every one

Lake Newcomb runs stocker calves out of Carter, Oklahoma, and the math on doing this right has only gotten more serious. His father was a CPA and a banker, so the lesson stuck early: it better pencil out, or you're better off selling out and putting the money in the bank. With calf costs running three times what they did four or five years ago, jumping from $700-800 up to $2,400 a head, the risk on every animal is high enough that a few tubs start looking cheap by comparison. That's what pushed him to test Riomax tubs and paste on a set of stocker calves.

The results held up. Comparing groups on the same number of calves, the ones that got the paste ran a pull rate three times lower than the ones that didn't. Of the calves he did have to doctor, just 4 to 5 head, none were lost and none needed doctoring twice, meaning they stayed with their original bunch instead of rolling back a weight class and losing 30 to 45 days of gain to catch up. Less sickness also means less labor: with a fall roundup that runs 120 head a day and four to six cowboys in the saddle from daylight to dark, cutting down on doctoring is real money back in the operation, not just healthier calves. As he put it, "I'm looking at it kinda like it's a cheater."

"It's worth every penny if we can get that done."

Open cows, pounds you don't wean, sickness, or forage that goes out the back end don't make you money, do they?

"We've been able to save enough hay with Riomax and we're increasing our production with Rhyzogreen. Both of those products have made it possible for us to have the confidence in knowing we're gonna be just fine.

"I think it's a pretty cheap way to get way more out of your soil than what we do weithout. More out of what they eat, so they eat less, and Rhyzogreen gives them more grass."

"...It's a win-win. You're attacking it on both fronts and you're nailing it on both fronts, so it's kind of a no-brainer. Why wouldn't you do both (Riomax and Rhyzogreen) at the same time?"

"I saw increased yields on every field I treated, every one...The worst yield increase was 17% up to 85%."

“The ground I sprayed versus the ground I didn’t was about 3 bales to the acre difference... $300/acre value. The product has more than paid for itself. This is something we’ll continue to do. It speaks for itself.”
