50% Less Feed Expense: Why We Changed Our Cattle Operation

Fast Facts

  • No sick pen last year, just one calf darted all year
  • Cutting about 4 bales of hay a month in that pasture, at roughly $100/bale
  • Previous tub ran 2-to-1 consumption at $250, before adding in mineral, hay, or wormer savings
  • Noticeable fly control improvement last year
  • Losing one calf at weaning costs about $3,000, and health held steady all the way through weaning on Riomax
  • Once mineral, hay, and wormer costs are deducted out, feeding roughly 15-20 fewer bales of hay a year

Roger Givens runs cow-calf and stocker cattle out of Elk City, Oklahoma, and for years dealt with the routine of a sick pen: pulling calves, darting some, some sickness every season even if death loss stayed low. He'd also been feeding a mineral program he felt was good, but costly, and running a different tub that consumed at a 2-to-1 rate and cost $250 on its own, before factoring in any of the mineral, hay, or wormer benefits he'd eventually credit to Riomax. He tried it on pasture first, then committed to the whole program, and this is his third year on it.

The changes showed up across the board. Last year there was no sick pen at all, just one calf darted the entire year. Hay dropped by roughly 4 bales a month in that pasture at around $100 a bale, and fly control was noticeably better too. Once he deducted out what he was already spending on mineral, hay, and wormer, he figures the tub comes close to breaking even, meaning he's mostly just paying the cost upfront rather than spending more overall. The biggest payoff, though, is at weaning: losing just one calf there runs about $3,000, and keeping calves healthy through that window on the same tub they were already on has been, in his words, one of the biggest selling points. As he put it, "they've earned it with me because I was an easy one to get on. I don't just jump on the bandwagon and take off on the next train."

"We've been able to save enough hay with Riomax and we're increasing our production with Rhyzogreen. Both of those products have made it possible for us to have the confidence in knowing we're gonna be just fine.

"I think it's a pretty cheap way to get way more out of your soil than what we do weithout. More out of what they eat, so they eat less, and Rhyzogreen gives them more grass."

"...It's a win-win. You're attacking it on both fronts and you're nailing it on both fronts, so it's kind of a no-brainer. Why wouldn't you do both (Riomax and Rhyzogreen) at the same time?"

"I saw increased yields on every field I treated, every one...The worst yield increase was 17% up to 85%."

“The ground I sprayed versus the ground I didn’t was about 3 bales to the acre difference... $300/acre value. The product has more than paid for itself. This is something we’ll continue to do. It speaks for itself.”
