60 Days to a Better Herd: The Mineral Change I Should Have Made Sooner

Fast Facts

  • Cows turned around in about 60 days after switching to Riomax
  • Went from being short about 6 calves to getting roughly 5 extra calves in about 2 weeks come December
  • Consumption running about a quarter pound/day in drought, closer to an eighth pound/day in normal wet conditions
  • Had enough carryover hay to sell some at $65/bale
  • Cattle stayed calmer and harder to gather, more time laying down chewing cud
  • Tried multiple mineral options first (expensive mineral, cheap mineral, salt blocks, sulfur blocks, red block) with no improvement before Riomax

Wiley Horn, who raises cattle in Minco, Oklahoma, had a set of cows that just weren't looking good no matter what he tried. He'd worked through expensive mineral, cheap mineral, salt blocks, sulfur blocks, and a red mineral block, and the cattle still weren't coming around. After switching to Riomax, it took about 60 days before he noticed a real turnaround, and it held: conception rates picked up, and a set of cows he'd been short about six calves on ended up throwing roughly five extra calves in about a two-week stretch that December, with those calves now weighing close to 500 pounds or more.

The rest of the story showed up in the details. Consumption runs about a quarter pound a day during the current drought, but closer to an eighth of a pound in normal, wetter conditions. He had enough carryover hay this year to sell some at $65 a bale, which he credits to the tub stretching his forage further. Out checking cattle, he noticed they were laying out more, chewing their cud, calm and content, to the point they got a little harder to gather up. He calls himself a tight wad and a conservative guy, but he's convinced the tub pays for itself once you run the numbers, and his advice to a younger neighbor who thought it was too expensive was simple: "just try it on a set of cows... give it sixty, ninety days and see what they do."

"The price the cattle are nowadays, it's the tub that pays for itself. I really believe that."

Open cows, pounds you don't wean, sickness, or forage that goes out the back end don't make you money, do they?

"We've been able to save enough hay with Riomax and we're increasing our production with Rhyzogreen. Both of those products have made it possible for us to have the confidence in knowing we're gonna be just fine.

"I think it's a pretty cheap way to get way more out of your soil than what we do weithout. More out of what they eat, so they eat less, and Rhyzogreen gives them more grass."

"...It's a win-win. You're attacking it on both fronts and you're nailing it on both fronts, so it's kind of a no-brainer. Why wouldn't you do both (Riomax and Rhyzogreen) at the same time?"

"I saw increased yields on every field I treated, every one...The worst yield increase was 17% up to 85%."

Todd Farrington

“The ground I sprayed versus the ground I didn’t was about 3 bales to the acre difference... $300/acre value. The product has more than paid for itself. This is something we’ll continue to do. It speaks for itself.”
