The truth about stocking 20% more cattle on the same land
I'm convinced that we could stock up to 15 to 20% more of these stocker cattle on the same ground. Lazy TM livestock, we're here in Roscoe, Montana. Preston, my grandson, this is my son Dustin and myself, Terrell. My protein supplementation and my mineral supplementation was a steady by jerks approach. Seasonally, I would put out mineral or put out protein supplement and it seemed like I was always behind the eight ball. In a dry season like we're going through right now, it seemed like I was late to the table to get the product out there. And same with mineral. There are certain times of the year when cattle in this area will quit the mineral. Then when you put it back out, they would more or less gorge the mineral. Pure fact of overconsumption on some of the other protein supplements eventually to to get the consumption right, we'd have to take the approach. Well, we'll put out a ten day supply. And if they ate it in four, they then just went six days without it. With the Rhyzogreen product, we monitor the consumption. So far, so good. And so it's taken a lot of the it's more of a steady approach and taken a lot of the peaks and valleys out of mineral and protein supplementation. I've always been, even prior to Riomax, I've always been one to really watch that cow patty and and watch how that patty stacks up. I think the first and most notable thing was even in dry conditions like we have here today that we're seeing that that forage is being utilized because we're not stacking that patty. I think the second thing, especially on the cow calf side was those cows are shedding out. Those cows seem very satisfied. Not a lot of discontent in the cattle, but the satisfaction itself. We've seen as we wean simultaneously with our backgrounder. We each wean about a thousand calves at a time. Our backgrounder is impressed as to how our calves have weaned compared to his own. 's really quizzed me and asked me what do you think that difference is? I think the true difference is having those cattle on the Riomax, having that gut healthy and ready to start taking on that rash. It made our backgrounder enough of a believer that they started on Rio last spring with their own cow herd. They committed to just doing their young cows first. We think that, just weaning those calves simultaneously was a pretty good test, but our calves considerably easier, less treats. We just attribute a lot of that to how Rio had those cattle set up and ready to go. If you do get in a situation for whatever reason that there is over consumption, Rio has been very good in coming in and giving that customer product to bring them back to status quo with their consumption. So I don't think there's a lot of risk in that when you've got that cost guard protection. Once you get past the sticker shock and and you really do run your pencil and and you analyze, you know, the hay savings. And when you feed hay, they eat about six pounds less hay a day, and that was on a big group of pairs that we did. So $300 a ton hay, that's gonna be huge. The forage savings in a situation like this, but quote unquote normal year, which we're not having this year, I'm convinced that we could stock up to 15 to 20% more of these stocker cattle on the same ground. My advice is to try those young that young stock first and track consumption and see where it can benefit you there. And then if that works out and that is a benefit to you, then consider putting the the whole herd on. It's a big upfront cost and it's hard to calculate monetarily all those benefits in the in on the backside. But for us, I'm confident that it's there. You know, we we've sure seen it in our operation that it will pay for itself. And and at these levels and at these prices, it doesn't take much advantage to pay for it. It's it's it's an easier bite now than it's ever been.
Fast Facts
- Fed about 6 lbs less hay a day on a big group of pairs
- Calves weaned easier with fewer treatments
- Steadier intake, fewer peaks and valleys in mineral and protein
- Better forage use, even in a dry year
- Cows shedding out and content
- Their backgrounder put his own young cows on Riomax
Terrill runs Lazy TM Livestock in Roscoe, Montana, alongside his son Dustin and grandson Preston. Before Riomax, he called his protein and mineral program “a steady by jerks approach.” He put supplement out seasonally and always seemed to be behind the eight ball, especially in a dry year. Cattle would quit the mineral at certain times of year, then gorge when it went back out. With other protein supplements, a ten-day supply might be gone in four, leaving the cattle six days without.
On Riomax, consumption has been steadier and has taken a lot of the peaks and valleys out of their supplementation. Terrill has always watched how the cow patty stacks up, and even in dry conditions he’s seeing that forage is being used because the patty isn’t stacking. The cows are shedding out and seem satisfied. Lazy TM Livestock weans about a thousand calves at a time, at the same time as their backgrounder, and Terrill says their calves weaned considerably easier with fewer treatments. He credits a lot of that to Riomax having the cattle’s guts ready for the ration. Their backgrounder was impressed enough to start his own young cows on it last spring.
Terrill is honest about the sticker shock, but on a big group of pairs he saw them eat about six pounds less hay a day, with hay at $300 a ton. He says they’ve seen it pay for itself in their operation. His advice for anyone on the fence is to start with young stock, track consumption, and put the whole herd on if it works for you.
Open cows, pounds you don't wean, sickness, or forage that goes out the back end don't make you money, do they?

Seen a lot of savings on our on our pastures. Generally, figure about five and a half to six acres of pair around through here. We've been even last year through the drought of that we had of twenty twenty, we did four and a half acres of pair on on ours, still had adequate grass left. Cattle came off in good condition. They weren't weren't malnutritioned, weren't low body scores. Been running pretty consistent, six body score better on everything. We're paying right around fifty dollar an acre cash rent up here is kinda kind of a common thing. You can knock out an acre here off of every cow that that saves a lot of money. Mean, fifty fifty bucks and you don't need four hundred another four hundred acres. It's another twenty thousand. So all of a sudden you got forty forty five thousand dollars in your pocket and you still have all the extra added benefits through the mineral, the health benefits of it. And it really saved on the last year too with the drought. We didn't think we'd get through. We put the same amount of number in the pastures and it didn't rain. We pulled it out and we still had old grass in the pasture. I didn't know the tub saved that whole deal. We had stretched it a lot because there was a lot of people selling cows and we didn't sell anything and we didn't pull them out early. And this year, most of the pastures around here are pretty much nothing. And we drove through everything. We still got, you know, shoots of grass and tufts of grass all over the place. Not a lot, but it we kept them. It made a huge difference. As far as paying for itself, you know, you got to feed and you start saving instead of a lot of guys are up to forty five, fifty five pounds. It was figured somewhere in there a big cow and even when they had the calf on them sixty pounds. So if you're feeding thirty pounds, yeah, it's gonna easily pay for itself without you see a bit. I mean, we, you can see it on the cow calf pairs too, bigger calves. We calve in May, June, and we're weaving seven hundred and some pound calves off of Dallas. So it makes, yeah, we can see the difference really easy. You just go through each step and see We're running more cows than we used to run on the same acres. That is a big deal. Because I used to on on my pastures, they're not big pastures, but on my pastures, I used to run twenty five head and they would have it grazed down to nothing in five months easy. Now I can run thirty, thirty five on the same pastures, and they can stay there another month longer easy on any given year. And this year, they got to stay two months longer, and there's still grass left over. Well, yeah, it's high priced, but it's like if if you can afford or not. But I think you can afford it because you cannot afford not to feed it because you can get your cattle to market faster. They're healthier. You could run more cattle on your land or you can stay there longer before you have to move on to an another patch. The cows are way healthier. They're way more content. They're happy. They're happy cows.

"We've been able to save enough hay with Riomax and we're increasing our production with Rhyzogreen. Both of those products have made it possible for us to have the confidence in knowing we're gonna be just fine.
Dan Reinke
Sheridan, WY
"I think it's a pretty cheap way to get way more out of your soil than what we do weithout. More out of what they eat, so they eat less, and Rhyzogreen gives them more grass."
Shane Keller
Valentine, NE
"...It's a win-win. You're attacking it on both fronts and you're nailing it on both fronts, so it's kind of a no-brainer. Why wouldn't you do both (Riomax and Rhyzogreen) at the same time?"
Bradley Franke
Cross Plains, TX
"I saw increased yields on every field I treated, every one...The worst yield increase was 17% up to 85%."
Todd Farrington
Collbran, CO
“The ground I sprayed versus the ground I didn’t was about 3 bales to the acre difference... $300/acre value. The product has more than paid for itself. This is something we’ll continue to do. It speaks for itself.”
Jim Lambert

“Went from 40 acres/cow in this drought to 30 acres/ cow . . . that’s $70/ cow/year!“
Raymond Rivale

"My disease in my calves has went down tremendously, and I attribute it to Riomax. That's the only thing I changed."
